Albert “Al” Burkhart passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the age of 72.
A native of Pittsburgh, and resident of Mechanicsburg, Al devoted his life to his family, his students, and the arts. He attended college at Penn State University, where he earned an undergraduate degree in Art, specializing in ceramics, and a Masters degree in Art Education. He was an art instructor at all levels; he taught adults, college students, and for the longest duration, the students of Harrisburg School District. After retirement, he enjoyed expressing his creativity through stained glass art, jewelry, and constructing steel and glass sculptures. Building and flying control line model airplanes was a hobby of Al’s, and he was a member of the AMA and local HAMS aeromodelling club. He was also a past member of the Central PA Rock Club.
Surviving is his wife of 49 years, Joanne M. Burkhart (nee Petrie); sons, Jason Burkhart of Mechanicsburg, and Eric Burkhart (wife, Ronni) of Carlisle; and two grandchildren, Chase and Jade Burkhart. In addition to his parents, the late Gilbert and Beatrice (Reiner) Burkhart, Al was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
He was a member of Grantham Brethren in Christ Church, 421 Grantham Road, Mechanicsburg, PA; a memorial service will be held there on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 11AM. Visitation with family will begin one hour prior to the service. A private burial will take place in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill.
