Alice C. Egland, 93, of Messiah Lifeways, Upper Allen Twp., PA died Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at her residence. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Tapley of Brooklin, ME; nieces Margaret DeCamillis of Ephrata, PA, Ruth Benson of Mechanicsburg, PA, Janet Trovato of Manheim, PA, Lori Edwards of Holden, ME and Carol Becker of Landing, NJ, and nephews, Steven Egland of Brewer, ME, Paul Becker of Bethlehem, PA and Joel Becker of Denver, CO..

Born in Brooklyn, NY to Thomas and Bessie (Jensen) Egland, Alice lived in Queens Village, NY for most of her life. She graduated from The High School of Music and Art in New York, NY and played the piano and organ for many years. She attended Norwegian Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. She attended Teachers College of Columbia University, earning both a B.S. in Nursing and M.A. degree in Nursing Service Administration. Her nursing career included work as a staff nurse, instructor, administrator and director. She retired from her position as Vice President and Director of Nursing at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center of New York in 1981, but soon thereafter took on the job as Director of Nursing at Eger Lutheran Home in Staten Island, NY, where she also served on the Trustee Board and Board of Directors.

She was organist and choir director for St. Albans Lutheran Church, in Queens, NY for many years. After retiring to New Jersey, Alice, was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church of Succasuuna, and attended St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, Maine while staying at her summer home in Brooklin, Maine. She was an active member of the Hillside Association of Retired People (HARP) in Succasunna while residing in New Jersey. While a resident at Messiah Village, she attended St. Peter Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg, PA.

She enjoyed music and reading, and was a caring and generous woman who lived her faith in her daily life. She loved her family and was a friend to many. She enjoyed her summers in Brooklin, Maine with family and friends, and was the accompanist at the summer hymn sings at the Rockbound Chapel in Brooklin, Maine.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 25th, 2PM, at the Messiah Village Chapel, Messiah Lifeways, 100 Mt. Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rockbound Chapel, c/o Paul Gallo, 666 Reach Road, Brooklin, Maine 04616.
