Alton R. Heimbach, 101, of Fairview Township, passed away on the evening of Monday, February 3, 2025, at Penn State Holy Spirit Medical Center, Camp Hill. Born on August 7, 1923, in Wagner, PA, he was the son of the late H. Roy and Mary L. (Hoffman) Heimbach.
Hard work was instilled at a young age. He grew up on a farm in Mifflin County, spending most of his school years in a one-room schoolhouse before attending McClure High School. Alton proudly served his country from 1942–1946 in the U.S. Army where he was a Sergeant in the 157th Combat Engineers, Company C, Second Platoon. He landed at Utah Beach, Normandy, FR, on June 25, 1944, and was attached to Patton’s Third Army at Mantes; he was also part of the occupying force stationed in Austria. Returning home, he would marry his sweetheart, Marie, and start a family and career. He worked as a construction superintendent at multiple companies, overseeing hundreds of roadway construction projects across the state. He retired in 1987 but wouldn’t truly stop working until the late 90s.
Alton and Marie have been longtime members of Mechanicsburg Church of the Brethren, and in retirement, they enjoyed attending Army reunions along the East coast. Alton found time to go deer hunting and took pleasure in woodworking; he also enjoyed spending time at hunting camp and visiting Mifflin County. Above all else, he loved his family, and he was the consummate gentleman. His quiet nature spoke volumes, and he will be greatly missed by family and those who knew him best.
Surviving Alton is his wife of 72 years, Marie Mary (Loht) Heimbach; sons, Alton R. Heimbach (wife, Anne) of Mechanicsburg, and B. Jed Heimbach (wife, Cheryl) of Dover, DE; a daughter, Mary Susan (Heimbach) Rehm (husband, Terry) of Etters; six grandchildren, Lyndsey Teets (Tom), Nicole Tobias (Chase), Katrina Helman (Devin), Elizabeth Heimbach, Tanner Heimbach, and Cierra Heimbach; four great grandchildren; a brother, John H. Heimbach of Lewistown; and a sister-in-law, Betty Ann Heimbach of Port Royal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Florence Edmiston, Myron Heimbach and Hervin Heimbach.
A public funeral will be held at 11AM on Monday, February 10, 2025, at Mechanicsburg Church of the Brethren, with a viewing hour from 10AM until services begin in the church. Burial will immediately follow in Crossroads Cemetery, Lewisberry.
