Anthony J. Verhovshek, 99, formerly of New Cumberland and Forest City, PA, passed away Friday, September 5, 2014 in Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg.
He was a retired Assistant Controller for the Commonwealth of PA, Department of Labor and Industry, Harrisburg, an Army Veteran of WWII and a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves serving four years of active duty and thirty years in the Reserves. He was a graduate of the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and earned his undergraduate degree at the former Bloomsburg State College. He was a past president of the New Cumberland Chartier Club, past treasurer of the Keystonians, Harrisburg, past Quarter Master for VFW Post 3540, Harrisburg, past treasurer of the Garden Club of the West Shore, past treasurer of the Marysville Lions Club. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland, the American Legion Post 143, New Cumberland, and a life member of the Knights of Columbus. Tony was an accomplished musician who played the piano, organ and banjo. He enjoyed gardening, and traveled extensively.
Tony was the widower of Margaret E. (Pingerella) Verhovshek and was preceded in death by his son Gregory A. Verner and siblings Vincent, Henry, Ignatz, and Mary. He is survived by two grandsons: Anthony Verhovshek, his wife, Jennie, and their three sons of Brogue, PA; and John Verhovshek, his wife, Kymberly, and their son of Ashville, NC.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:30 pm on Thursday, September 11, 2014 in his church, 1300 Bridge St. New Cumberland, PA with the Rev. J. Michael McFadden as Celebrant. Viewing will be from 1 – 2 pm Thursday in Parthemore Funeral Home & Cremation Services, New Cumberland. Burial with military honors will be in Gettysburg National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Tony’s memory are respectfully requested to St. Theresa Parish and School, 1200 Bridge St. New Cumberland, PA 17070.
