Barbara Jo (Dowhower) Hoover, 64, of Rutherford, and formerly of New Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at her residence. Daughter of the late Russel H. and Evelyn M. (Spahr) Dowhower, she was born on January 5, 1955 in Harrisburg.
Barb was a graduate of Central Dauphin East High School (Class of ’72) and retired as an administrative assistant from the New Cumberland Army Depot. She cherished her family and friends; she was the most loving, caring, considerate and loyal individual around. She was always there for others and set a fine example for her daughter and family. She traveled when she could and she enjoyed working on “projects” around the house. She was affectionately known as “Barb the Builder,” due to her handiness and ability to fix almost anything. She was truly the family’s “rock.”
Barb is survived by her daughter, Amerika S. “Amy” Hoover, of New Cumberland; grandchildren, Christopher Reid, III (Heather Carlino), Jazmyn Reid-Royal (William Royal, III), Tianna Goodman and Tamiea Goodman; great-grandchildren, Bella and Laila Royal; siblings, Russell Dowhower, David Dowhower, Donna (Dowhower) Dickey, Jane (Dowhower) Dreese, Deborah (Dowhower) Rudy, and William E. “Bill” Dowhower; mother-in-law, Anne Hoover; brother-in-law, Todd Hoover; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is Barb’s lifelong friend, John “Diz” Desmond. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. “Butch” Hoover; a brother, Paul E. Dowhower; and a sister, Mary Rose (Dowhower) Zimmerman.
A graveside service will be held at 10AM on Saturday, August 24, 2019, at Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill. A celebration of life will follow at Rutherford VFW Post 1213, 6611 Evelyn Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111.
