Barney Joseph Osevala, 83, of Hummelstown, passed away on December 19 following a lengthy illness. The son of Barney and Rosella Osevala, Barney was born on September 23, 1930 in Shamokin, PA.
In addition to his parents, Barney was predeceased by his wife Jean whom he was married to for 47 years until her death in 2000. He was also predeceased by a brother Leonard Osevala of Kulpmont, PA.
Barney was a 1948 graduate of Shamokin High School and a 1954 graduate of Bloomsburg State Teachers College. Barney also earned a Master’s Degree in Administration from Bucknell University. He started his coaching and educational career at Solanco High School and moved to Hummelstown High School to become the head football coach and social studies teacher at the age of 26. He was named Lower Dauphin’s first varsity football coach in 1960 and transitioned into administration following his retirement from coaching. Barney was the high school principal at Lower Dauphin High School until his retirement in 1986.
Barney was an outstanding athlete who started four years of varsity football at Bloomsburg under the legendary Coach Redmon. He also had served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1949.
Barney leaves a sister, Marie Conrad of Lemoyne, PA, a daughter Bonnie Newhouse of Harrisburg, PA, a son Dr. Mark Osevala (Deborah) of Camp Hill, PA, and a son B. J. Osevala (Jill) of Hummelstown, PA, six grandchildren, and a soon to be great granddaughter.
Barney loved his family and was a fantastic supporter of any activities his children or grandchildren participated in. He was an avid sports fan, particularly the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Flyers, and Notre Dame football.
The family would like to express special thanks to Nancy Kompare of Shamokin, PA, for the companionship and happiness she brought to Dad over the past 13 years.
We would also like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Josh Shipley, Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, and the Oncology wing at Osteopathic Hospital for the compassion they bestowed on Barney and his family during this difficult time.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Parthemore Funeral Home of New Cumberland. There will be a private family ceremony at a future date.
