Bernard J. Murray, III, (Bert), 67, of Camp Hill passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, November 24, 2013 at the Carolyn Croxton Slane Hospice Residence after a month-long battle with a blood infection.
Bert was born and raised in Erie, PA and was the only child of Bernard J. Murray, Jr. and M. Winifred Murray. He graduated from Strong Vincent High School in Erie and attended college at Thiel College, Harrisburg Area Community College, Indiana Institute of Technology, and the Berkeley School of Languages. He was a sailor in the US Navy from 1967 – 1975 serving in Vietnam as a Navy Seal. Mr. Murray considered himself a “jack of all trades” and held a variety of jobs in the automotive and electronics industries.
Bert is survived by his loving wife, Pamela, and her children Deborah P. and Peter L. Sanders. In addition, he is survived by his three grandsons Mitchell Linden, John Whitman, and Nathaniel David. These three young boys brought much joy to their Grandpa in recent years. He is also survived by several cousins, living in Maine, Florida, and California.
For many years, Bert has enjoyed playing duplicate bridge and was a Lifetime member of the Harrisburg Bridge Club which he served as President from 2009-2010. He was a Gold Life Master and especially enjoyed mentoring new young players. Until a stroke in 2011 curtailed many activities, Bert was a voracious reader and trivia buff. He particularly enjoyed playing Trivial Pursuit with friends and assisting with students on the Quiz Bowl Team. He is a member of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church and served on the Mission Committee.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3pm Wednesday, December 4, at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. In Lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, 7790 Grayson Rd, Harrisburg, PA 17111
