David W. Harman, III, 96, formerly of New Cumberland died Thursday, July 6, 2023 at The Middletown Home.
In 1944 at the age of 17, before graduating from high school, Dave enlisted in the Navy. He was a Seabee and worked on a Construction Battalion. He served in Okinawa, Japan where he helped to build an air strip from coral. While in the Navy, he was a recipient of the Pacific-Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal. Upon his return to the USA, he went back to high school and took classes in order to graduate. With help from the GI Bill, Dave attended Bloomsburg and then Penn State University where he graduated with a degree in business. He went on to work for the Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania for 34 years until his retirement. In 1952, he married the love of his life, Joan. This August, they would have celebrated their 71st anniversary.
Dave was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Camp Hill for more than 60 years where he served in many capacities. He was a member of Masonic Order Lodge No. 707, Telephone Pioneers of America, National Safety Council and Lamda Chi Fraternity.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Middletown Home for the care and love they gave to our father as well as our whole family. We are forever grateful.
David was born December 8, 1926 in Harrisburg to the late David W. Harman, Jr. and Laura W. (Mills) Harman.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Marie (Martin) Harman; children, Sally A. Winey (Bill) of Statesville, NC, David W. Harman, IV (Lucy) of Camp Hill, Laurie M. Zimmerman (Tom) of Lemoyne, Eileen L. McCann (Jake) of Kent, WA, and Elisa L. Konopski (Ken) of New Cumberland; thirteen grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10am until funeral services at 11am Friday, July 14th at Parthemore Funeral Home, New Cumberland. Burial will follow in Rolling Green Cemetery.
