Delores Virginia Miller, 92, of Lower Allen Township died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Ray D. Miller, with whom she celebrated 63 years of marriage on June 7, 2021. Born Aug. 14, 1929, in Dover Township to the late Walter J. and Miriam G. (Dubbs) Stambaugh, Delores was raised on the family farm.
She was a graduate of Dover High School, 1947, York Hospital School of Nursing, 1950, with postgraduate studies at The University of Pennsylvania, beginning her career with the York Visiting Nurse Association (VNA). She devoted her life to her children, leaving her nursing career after her first child was born. Delores returned to nursing at the Harrisburg VNA to pay for her children’s college education. Before her retirement, she also worked a short time at the former Health South Rehab Center and a Mechanicsburg nursing home.
Delores found the most joy in caring for and being with her family; attending her children’s and then her grandchildren’s sports, theatrical and musical activities. She was always visible on the sidelines and in the audience cheering them all on. As an avid fan of Penn State football and season ticket holder, Delores attended many home and away games including the Rose, Fiesta and Outback Bowls. In retirement, Delores and Ray traveled the country with family, taking their RV on several cross-country adventures. She also enjoyed gardening, solving puzzles and playing cards.
She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church where she sang in multiple choirs, taught Sunday school and worked tirelessly in the women’s group and the quilters. Delores was past president of the Lower Susquehanna Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, as well as a life-time member of the Alumni Association of York Hospital School of Nursing.
Delores is survived by her husband Ray; her three children, Pamela K. Rickert and husband Scott of Mechanicsburg; Cynthia F. Stattel and husband Philip of Centre Hall; Gary R. Miller and partner David Wolf of Wrightsville; six grandchildren, Spencer Rickert, Robert Stattel, Virginia Stattel, Brent Randol (wife Jana Kolassa), Devon Miller (wife Susan), Logan Miller (wife Jessica Roller); and many nieces and nephews.
