Doris H. Blue

January 12, 1924 — August 16, 2019

Doris H. Blue, 95, of The Woods at Cedar Run, Camp Hill died Friday, August 16, 2019.

Doris Lorraine Haken was born in 1924 in Northumberland County to William Charles and Evelyn Booth Haken. As a young girl, Doris’s family moved to Hershey, PA where her father became a florist for the Hershey Company, and Doris developed a passion for chocolate! After graduating from Hershey High School, she went to work for the Hershey Chocolate Company herself, and worked there until a different passion called to her.

In June of 1944, Doris answered the call to serve her country and joined the WAVES, Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, a unit of the U.S. Naval Reserve. With great pride, Doris served her country through the end of World War II receiving both the American Campaign Medal, and the Victory Medal for service in the American Theater of Operations during World War II. She separated from the military honorably in August 1946, and it remained among her proudest accomplishments. Many times, she joyfully recounted the tale of returning from a weekend of leave with a friend, in a military aircraft, when word came over the radio that the war had ended!

Doris married Horace “Bus” Blue in New York City in1954 and the couple resided in Mechanicsburg, PA raising their four children until Horace’s death in 1974. Always proud of her husband and children, Doris devoted herself to her family and each of them found strength through her wisdom and independent spirit. She once wrote, “Nothing in life means as much as family, and I feel truly blessed to have such a wonderful one. Each one is special in his or her own way, and the differences are unique. Can’t help but think how their Dad would have been proud of them.”

Her love and blessings extended to her three grandchildren; Julie Wertz of Mechanicsburg, and Avery Blue and Mackenzie Blue of Philadelphia, PA.

Doris will always be remembered for her creative and artistic gifts in quilting, needlework and painting, and her gracious and open heart. Anyone who had the opportunity to know her learned something from her.

Doris is survived by a son, Gregory L. Blue of West Chester, daughter, Virginia A. Blue of Mechanicsburg, son-in-law, Bob Pelles of Camp Hill, and sister, Shirley Anne Haken of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband Horace C. Blue, son, Charles Owen, and daughter Catherine Louise.

Visitation will be from 5pm until funeral services at 6:30pm Wednesday at Parthemore Funeral Home, New Cumberland. Private burial will be in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 897, Hershey, PA 17033.
