Dr. Gerald S. Brinton, 94, of Bethany Village, Lower Allen Twp., a longtime resident of New Cumberland, died Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the Village.
An Army Veteran of WWII, he attended New Cumberland High School, Shippensburg State Teachers College, Duke University, and University of Maryland. He taught at Appomattox High School, VA, Penn Township, Cumberland County, PA, Bladensburg High School, MD, New Cumberland High School, and Cedar Cliff Senior High School. He retired as Curriculum Director from West Shore School District.
After retirement he continued work as a teacher and historian of Community United Methodist Church, served as a board member of United Methodist Homes, Incorporated and Bethany Towers. He continued participation in the New Cumberland Public Library, the Harrisburg Civil War Round Table, and the Cumberland County Historical Society.
Additional memberships include NEA, PSEA, Pennsylvania State Social Studies Committee, Chartier, Keystonians, New Cumberland Olde Towne, Marching and Chowder Society, and the Bumblers’ Reading Club.
He was born May 20, 1918 in Harrisburg to the late John C. and Janet (Slike) Brinton. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mildred Sheaffer Brinton, his classmate whom he married in 1944, his brother Ronald and sister Betty Brinton Unger.
He is survived by daughters Betsy Heefner (Joseph), Carol Allan (Douglas), grandchildren Sara Clarke (Aaron), Anne Heefner, Daniel Allan, and Timothy Allan, and great-granddaughters Julia and Natalie Clarke.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8pm Thursday at Parthemore Funeral Home, New Cumberland and from 10:30am until funeral services at 11am Friday at Community United Methodist Church, New Cumberland. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Fairview Twp.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are requested to Community United Methodist Church, 1601 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, PA 17070 or to New Cumberland Public Library, 1 Benjamin Plaza, New Cumberland, PA 17070.
