Dr. Samuel R. Mowery, 92, passed from this life to his heavenly home on December 20, 2024 at his home in Camp Hill. He joins the love of his life, Donna (Adams) Mowery, whom he was married to for 68 years. Sam was a caring and compassionate person to all he met.
Born September 29, 1932, he was the son of the late Samuel H. and Miriam Mowery. He was also predeceased by his sister Winifred Stoner and brother-in-law, Ike Stoner.
After graduating from Lemoyne High School in 1950, Sam attended Gettysburg College (Class of 1954) where he was a proud Bullet athlete, playing football and baseball. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Sam enlisted in the United States Army where he was a medical technician. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1961. Shortly after Sam and Donna started their family, he began a private family practice in rural New Cumberland, where he served his patients faithfully day and night with his gentle spirit and wonderful bedside manner. Sam often reminisced that delivering babies was one of the most rewarding aspects of his career. He was the school physician at Red Land High School for several decades. Sam was inducted into both the West Shore Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame and the Red Land Sports Hall of Fame. He was on the staff of Community General Osteopathic Hospital where he served as chief of staff. Doctor Sam, as he was known to many, was also a beloved member of the community. Even in his last years at The Woods at Cedar Run, he cared for residents just as he had cared for his patients during his career.
Sam will be dearly missed by his loving family. He is survived by his children, Jennifer Stambaugh (Craig) of Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, Pamela Mowery (Alicia) of York, PA, Scott Mowery (Lisa) of Etters, PA and Samuel Mowery (Jessica) of Alexandria, VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Grant (Michaelina), Benjamin (Lorissa), Luke (Ashley), Alexander, Samuel, Joseph (Morgan), Carys, Ryan, and Keira. Also surviving Sam are three great-grandchildren, Cecilia, Elaina and Benjamin. Three nephews, Mike, Sam and Andy Stoner and their families also survive him as well as many dear friends and colleagues.
Visitation will be from 11:30am until memorial services at 1pm Saturday, January 4, 2024 at Parthemore Funeral Home, New Cumberland. Interment will follow in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill.
