Edward P. “Ed” Graney, 77, of New Cumberland, died October 26, 2018, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Son of the late Edmond and Margaret (Brolly) Graney, he was born on November 22, 1940, in County Kerry, Ireland.
After moving to the United States, Ed’s family settled in Philadelphia, and he had a great love for the city of brotherly love. Ed loved and appreciated the places where he lived, and they became a deep part of who he was.
Ed earned his bachelor’s degree at Philadelphia University of Textiles and Science, Philadelphia, thanks to the G. I. Bill, which he earned as a Vietnam War veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as an accountant at AMP Inc., and retired from there after more than 25 years of employment. He was always very involved with his church, both at Holy Infant Catholic Church, York Haven (now located in Strinestown) and St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland; he taught RCIA and CCD classes for many years, and served as a special eucharistic minister and youth group advisor. As a member of the Knights of Columbus, Ed was a Fourth Degree Knight of the Bishop J.W. Shanahan Assembly. He also volunteered at the West Shore Senior Center, New Cumberland.
Quite an athlete himself, Ed had an affinity for sports throughout his life. He was a huge Philadelphia Eagles and Notre Dame football fan, and he coached his kids’ Red Land youth sports teams whenever he could. He was a great supporter of his children, never missing their many concerts, theater productions, band competitions and sporting events. Oldies music held a soft spot in his heart, and he loved nature and all its creatures.
Surviving is his wife of 52 years, Margaret F. (Minner) Graney; children, Sharon L. Fagan (husband, Christopher) of Camp Hill, Suzanne M. Graney of New Cumberland, and Brian E. Graney (wife, Kristen) of Towson, MD; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Graney, Jackson Graney, Dylan Graney and Carter Graney; siblings, John Graney (wife, Betty) of Collinsville, IL,, Mary Vapniarek (husband, Frank) of Glenolden, Hugh Graney (wife, Kathleen) of Clifton Heights, and Eugene Graney (wife, Gina) of Glenolden; and a sister-in-law, Alice Graney. Ed was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Graney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland. A visitation will take place prior to mass, from 9:30-10:30AM, at Parthemore Funeral Home & Cremation Services (located directly across the street from the church). A private burial will take place at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
