Ellen L. Evans

Ellen L. Evans, 81, of New Cumberland, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021 in her residence.

She was born in Scranton, PA on April 26, 1940 to Walter and Edith (Lodwick) Evans. Her father died in 1948 and her mother remarried in 1958 to William Pembridge, Sr. She is survived by three half-sisters and their families; several cousins; and several generations of nieces and nephews. Ellen was preceded in death by her dear friend and colleague Linda M. Smith who she shared her life with for 52 years; and her five poodles. Also surviving is Linda’s brother Samuel J. Smith, Jr. (Joann), their daughter Lindsey Altland (Brett), and their children Madelyn and Caleb; and numerous good friends and neighbors.

Ellen graduated from West Scranton High School and Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing. She pursued further education at Marywood College and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her nursing career of 40 years was spent mostly in Nursing Administration at Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield, NJ; as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force at Wright Patterson AF Base, Dayton, OH; and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center where she was instrumental in opening the Obstetrical Unit in 1970 and established prenatal classes and home visits. She retired from Polyclinic Medical Center and Pinnacle Health in 1979 as a Clinical Risk Manager.

Ellen enjoyed life, watching TV, collecting, reading, her home, family and friends. Please pray for her soul and remember the good times.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 in Welsh Calvinistic Cemetery, Spring Brook Twp., PA.
