Emelie A. Sconing

August 8, 1934 — June 1, 2022

Emelie A. Sconing, 87, formerly of New Cumberland, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 1, 2022, while under hospice care at Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg. She was the daughter of the late James A. and Sarah E. (Trainor) Travers, born on August 8, 1934 in Wheeling, WV.

Emelie was a 1952 graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School, and then went on to pursue a nursing degree. Her clinical training took place at St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh. She earned her Bachelor’s degree through St. Joseph’s College of Maine. She would meet her late husband, Art, during her training in Pittsburgh, and the two remained married until his passing in 2019. After nearly 20 years of clinical nursing, she went on to have a successful career in the health insurance industry as Manager of Utilization Review for the former Blue Shield, Camp Hill, retiring after 30+ years of service.

Emelie volunteered for the political arm of AARP, and she and Art would give their time to the Helen Kraus Society, caring for homeless dogs. After moving to New Cumberland from Camp Hill in 1987, Emelie and Art attended St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland. Dogs were ever-present in the Sconing residence, and Emelie took pride in caring for her pets and her home. She particularly enjoyed tending to her garden. In retirement, she and Art would vacation yearly at their Florida timeshare. Together they explored much of Europe and went on two Caribbean cruises. She was a person who would not hesitate to speak her mind and knew how to get things done. However, peace and happiness were truly present when her grandchildren entered her life.

Surviving Emelie are her two sons, James A. Sconing of Bradenton, FL, and Michael J. Sconing (Debbie) of Virginia Beach, VA; two daughters, Gail M. Sconing (Thomas Samuel) of York, and Judy A. Miller of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, Ashley, Aleq, Tyler, Jordan and Faith; and two great-grandchildren, Noah and Leyla.

A public viewing will be held from 6-8PM on Monday, June 6, 2022 at Parthemore Funeral Home & Cremation Services, New Cumberland. At 11AM on Tuesday, June 7, Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland. Burial will immediately follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Mechanicsburg.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Emelie’s name to St. Theresa Parish, New Cumberland.
