Erdman N. Roof

Erdman N. Roof, 82, of Fairview Township, passed away Monday, January 9, 2017 at his home. Erd was born May 30, 1934 in Steelton, the son of Charles L. and Catherine E. (Robison) Roof.

He was a 1953 graduate of the former New Cumberland High School, Varsity lettering in football, basketball and baseball for 3 years. Entering the United States Marine Corps in 1953-1956, he served at El Toro Marine Air Station in Santa Ana, CA, and Kaneohe Bay Air Station in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu. In February 1955, Erd participated in the Atomic Bomb Nuclear Tests in Yucca Flat, NV, and was a member of the National Association of Atomic Veterans. Once a Marine, Always a Marine.

Erd spent over 30 years in real estate, and during that time he was a Scout Master, a Little League baseball coach, a member of his church choir, a volunteer speaker about by-pass heart surgery and recuperation, and an avid golfer. But his greatest joy was his family. He considered himself the richest of men, and thanked God daily for the abundant blessings given to him and Sue through their sons, “daughters” and grandchildren.

Erd is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years, Suzanne M. (Snyder) Roof, and four sons and their families: E. Jeffrey and daughter-in-law Susan S., Camp Hill, and grandson Bryson J., Mechanicsburg; Kevin S. and daughter-in-law Marie B., Mechanicsburg; and granddaughter Jacquelyn M., Mechanicsburg; Dr. Kreig D., daughter-in-law Elizabeth E., grandson Bennett D., and granddaughter Caroline M., Brentwood, TN; and Eric R., daughter-in-law Joan K., granddaughter Emily M. and her husband, Nathaniel Ross, Lancaster, and grandson Nathan R., Philadelphia.

Also surviving are two sisters, Audrey Bashore and husband Donald, Camp Hill, and Sharon Cook and husband Tommy, Martinsville, VA; and a sister-in-law, Anna Mae Roof, Lewisberry.

Erd’s life will be celebrated on Friday at 11:30am in the Fairview Bethel Church of God, 800 Old Forge Road, New Cumberland, PA with visitation from 10:30 until time of service. Burial will follow in Rolling Green Cemetery, Lower Allen Twp.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fairview Bethel Memorial Fund of Fairview Bethel Church of God or to the National Association of Atomic Veterans, NAAV
