Eugene E. Costello

June 4, 1934 — April 18, 2025

Etters, PA

Eugene E. Costello, known by many as “Poppy,” passed away peacefully on April 18th—Good Friday—surrounded by his devoted wife and cherished family. He was 90 years young.

Born on June 4, 1934, in a tent in Rockaway, New Jersey, Gene came from humble beginnings. At age 7, his family moved to Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, where he attended and graduated from West Shore High School. There, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball, served as class president, and even held a role in the school musical. Gene went on to attend Gettysburg College, where he played football, and later transferred to Penn State University—where his lifelong passion for PSU football began.

In 1959, Gene launched his real estate career. A decade later, in 1969, he opened and developed nine successful restaurants under the name Costy’s Pizza and Spaghetti House. Over the next 30 years, Gene worked with and led several real estate brokerages throughout the region. His life’s trajectory shifted when he joined the Mike Ferry Organization, and in 2005, he and his son co-founded RE/MAX 1st Advantage, along with a network of supportive companies.

In 2018, Gene was honored with induction into the Greater Harrisburg Association of Realtors Hall of Fame, a testament to his dedication and leadership in the industry.

A 49-year member of the West Shore Country Club, Gene found joy on the golf course and could often be found chipping a few balls with friends. Despite working six days a week, Gene’s greatest priority was always his family. He never missed the opportunity to cheer on his kids, grandkids, and even great-grandchildren at their sporting events.

Gene is survived by his wife and best friend of 67 years, Joan (Schwartz) Costello; children, Kathy Watts (Randy), Tim Costello (Regina) and Patty Costello (Ken Myhre); grandchildren, Brooks, Brinley, Bryce, Edie, Hank, Karlee and Griffin; and great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Maika, Mollie, Tilghman and Shepherd. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Betty Costello; sisters, Diane Henry and Betty Lindquist; brother-in-law, Carl Lindquist; and nephew, Ed Henry.

A public viewing will be held from 4-7PM on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Parthemore Funeral Home & Cremation Services, New Cumberland. A Celebration of Life will take place the following day, Wednesday, April 30, from 11AM-2PM at The Willows at Ashcombe Mansion, Mechanicsburg. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Gene’s name to either the JT Dorsey Foundation or LEEK Hunting & Mountain Preserve. You may also choose to donate to a worthy charity of your choice.

Gene’s legacy is one of hard work, integrity, and unwavering love for family. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, lessons, and laughter that will live on in all who knew and loved him.
