Eugene E. Woodring

March 21, 1928 — May 2, 2017

Eugene E. Woodring, 89, of New Cumberland, formerly of Johnstown, died Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at Holy Spirit Hospital, E. Pennsboro Twp.

He was born March 21, 1928, in Hazleton, PA to the late Grover B. and Bessie Jane (Balliet) Woodring. He was the widower of Merlyn G. Woodring.

He is survived by three daughters, Sharon Newmyer (Robert) of Wormleysburg, Cari Longyear (Craig) of Wormleysburg, and Amy Martin (Kyle) of Rockville, MD; and two granddaughters, Megan and Rachel Martin.

After graduation from high school, which he completed in only 11 years due to a combining of 7th and 8th grades, Gene joined the Army and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan during the post-WWII period. When he returned home he attended Penn State Harrisburg. In 1950, Gene was called for active duty and served as a Master Sergeant in the combat infantry in Korea.

When he returned from Korea, Gene worked as a bricklayer and carpenter for Bethlehem Steel, and in 1961, he started a new career with the Social Security Administration where he remained until his retirement as Manager of the Administration’s Somerset office.

In 2001, he moved to New Cumberland to be closer to his daughters and became an active member of the community. Gene believed that a joyful life comes not only from the great big things you may do, but also from those little things you can do daily to help someone else. This was evidenced by his volunteering and participation at Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church, New Cumberland Lions Club, NARFE, New Cumberland Food Bank and the New Cumberland library.

Gene was “A Gentlemen and a Scholar” and he will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 8th, at Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church, 228 Bridge St., New Cumberland, PA 17070. Visitation for friends and family will begin at 10:00 AM at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gene’s memory may be made to Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church.
