Gary A. Smith

Gary A. Smith, 82, of New Cumberland, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital. 

A member of the first graduating class from Cedar Cliff High School, Gary was a retired Teacher and Administrator from West Shore School District with 35 years of service. He was a member of Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisberry where he served on church council and taught Sunday School. He was a Community Representative to Fairview Twp.’s Uniform and Non-Uniform Pension Board. His professional organizations included the National Association of Secondary School Administrators and the Pennsylvania Association of Secondary School Administrators. 

Gary enjoyed various hobbies to include, hunting, gardening, golfing, traveling, and coin collecting. In addition he was a former member of the Fairview Twp. Lions Club.

He was born September 21, 1942 in Mechanicsburg to the late George A. and Laura Irene (Fishel) Smith. He was also preceded in death by his brother, George W. Smith, MD.

He is survived by his wife, Janet (Hetherington) Smith; two sons, Douglas G (Cindy Stewart) of Goldsboro and Jeffrey R. (Tammy) of Reading; a daughter, Sara E. Mackey (Jon) of York; sister, Sharon Reed of Glen Burnie, MD; and four grandchildren, Taylor, Codi, Ashton, and Joshua; one step-granddaughter, Maddie; and a great-grandson, Maxwell.

A Memorial Service is to be held on February 15th 2025 at Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 863 Lewisberry Road, Lewisberry, PA 17339. Visitation for family and friends to begin at 10am followed by a service at 11am.
