George Carson Merrill, Jr., of Newberry Twp., passed away at his home Sunday morning, June 15, 2014 at the age of 65. He was the Manager of Administrative Operations for The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.
George was born August 31, 1948 in Dover, DE to his late parents, George Carson Sr. and Mary (Joseph) Merrill. After graduating high school, he attended The University of Delaware for a year before volunteering for service in the United States Marine Corps. George served as a combat Marine and was awarded multiple citations and medals throughout his two tours during The Vietnam Theatre. He was also a member of VFW Post 537, Etters.
Prior to handling building acquisitions, security, and operations at L&I, George was Manager of Foreign Parts for Olivetti S.p.A. and president/CEO of Commutech Inc., a connector and cable start-up. He enjoyed playing golf and poker; and lived to entertain and spend time with all his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife Judy A. Merrill; two sons, George Carson, III (and his wife Jamie) and Jameson Paul (and his wife Brittney); four grandchildren, Cayden, Christian, Brynn, and Raya; and two younger sisters, Nancy Womer and Edna Cohee of DE.
Viewings will be held from 6 to 8pm Thursday and 10 to 11am Friday at Parthemore Funeral Home, 1303 Bridge Street, New Cumberland PA 17070. Funeral services will be held at 11am Friday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held at 10:30am Monday, June 23, 2014 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
