Major George Gentile, U.S. Army (R), 91, of Silver Spring Twp., Mechanicsburg, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at the Carolyn Croxton Slane Residence, Susquehanna Twp.
He retired in 1961 as a Major in the U.S. Army after 23 years of service and was a veteran of WWII and Korea. During WWII, he was in the first wave to hit Omaha Beach on D-Day. After being wounded and recovered, he returned to duty and saw action in most of the major campaigns up until the time of the Allied victory over Germany. In addition to the Purple Heart with Cluster, Major Gentile was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, U.N. Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and American Campaign Medal among others. He also retired as a Systems Analyst for the U.S. Security Assistance Command at the former New Cumberland Army Depot. He was a former Commissioner of the West Shore District, Keystone Council of Boy Scouts; former State Sports Director for Bowling for Special Olympics; The Men of Malvern for over thirty years; Knights of Columbus, Council 4068, Camp Hill; Fourth Degree Knight, Bishop Shanahan Council; and a volunteer at the Holy Spirit Hospital with over 13,000 hours of service.
Born in New Haven, CT, he was the son of the late Gennaro and Manuella (Richetelli) Gentile. He was the widow of Ruth Irene (Medland) Gentile.
Surviving are his wife, Sally A. (Werner) Gentile; six sons, Gerald S. Gentile (Monta) of Camp Hill, Richard A. Gentile (Kris) of Mechanicsburg, George A. Gentile of Virginia Beach, VA, Michael G. Gentile of Mechanicsburg, Thomas J. Gentile (Lora) of Severna Park, MD, James R. Gravesande of Moraga, CA, three daughters, Elizabeth A. Stump (Kent) of Rapid City, SD, Gloria Jean Van Dam (Ben) of Lake Stevens, WA, and Desiree L. Hardie (Robert) of York Haven; a brother, Biff Gentile of New Haven, CT; a sister, Anna M. Piscatelli of West Haven, CT; nineteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; one great great grandson.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday in St. Theresa Catholic Church, 1300 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, with the Rev. Michael McFadden as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery, West Hanover Twp., at the convenience of the family.
Viewing will be held from 6 8 PM Friday in Parthemore Funeral Home and Cremation Services, New Cumberland. The family requests no flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donors charity of choice.
