George H. Seidel, Jr., 88 of New Cumberland, PA, died December 30, 2020. He was born in Pottstown, PA on February 14, 1932, the son of the late George and Mary (Bishop) Seidel, Sr. George Jr. was the widower of Lois J. (Shetter) Seidel who died in 2011 after 56 years of marriage.
George was a 1950 graduate of Pottstown High School and a 1954 graduate of Kutztown State College. Mr. Seidel served in the Korean War at Fort Sill Oklahoma as a Chief Information and Education Specialist. He was retired from the Associated Petroleum Industries of Pennsylvania where he served as Executive Director from 1985 – 1997. George was appointed by PA Governor Dick Thornburgh as Director of Legislative Relations and Secretary of Legislative Affairs, serving from 1978 – 1985. He was employed by the Pennsylvania State Education Association as a Field Representative, then as Director of Field Operations and finally as Assistant Executive Director before joining the Thornburgh administration. George began his long and distinguished career as a history teacher in the Spring City School District at Springford Senior High School. George previously served as president of the Springford Education Association and the Montgomery County Education Association. He was a member of the National Education Association, State Education Association and the National Association of Legislative and Political Specialists in Education. George was a member of the Pennsylvania State Board of Education from 1980 – 2004.
After retirement George enjoyed spending time with his wife and family, golfing and watching the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles games.
Surviving are four sons, Kent A. of Harrisburg, PA, Todd E. and wife Bonnie (Mummert) of Manchester, PA, G. Joseph and wife Ann (Glasgow) of Mechanicsburg, PA and Lee M. and wife Tanya (Stimmell) of New Cumberland, PA and Conway, SC. Nine grandchildren, Jason Seidel, Ryan Seidel, Allison Vioral, Laura Ritter, Ian Seidel, Marissa Helmle, Kathrine Negri, Matthew Seidel, Julia Seidel and 12 great grandchildren, a sister, Joan Brasacchio of Pottstown, PA, two brothers, Richard B. and wife Carole of Boyertown, PA, Robert W. and wife Michele of Austin, TX, sister-in-law Mary Louise Shetter of Lemoyne, PA, brother-in-law Bruce Wagner of Enola, PA and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 in Rolling Green Cemetery, Lower Allen Twp. There will be no viewing or visitation.
