Helen E. “Betty” Winter, 87, of New Cumberland, passed away in the late evening of her 87th birthday, April 18, 2023, at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She was born in Harrisburg to the late Chester and Helen (Wire) Laudermilch.
A graduate of William Penn High School, Harrisburg (Class of ’54), she would remain in Central PA for most of her life. Working as a receptionist at Harrisburg Hospital, Betty would meet an ambulance driver named Ron; despite him laughing a bit too loudly on the first date, the two would become an inseparable pair, celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary this past fall. She went on to work as an administrative assistant for Appleby’s Plumbing & Heating in Lemoyne as well as the office of the Zembo Shrine potentate. Though she worked a few other jobs throughout the years, the time she enjoyed most was being around those she loved.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, Nan, and friend, and someone you could always count on for help – especially if a meal was needed. Her door was always open, and there was always room for one more at her table (and enough food for 25 more); she always had the best snacks, and she was lovingly referred to as “Mom” by many of her children’s friends. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards and games with family and friends, but she could most often be found at the events of her children; and later in life, those of her grandchildren. She rarely missed a concert, dance recital, or football game; and not rain, snow, fog, blazing heat, or bitter cold could keep her from sitting through thousands of innings of baseball. Most importantly, she was present for each of them when they needed it most. She was nurturing to all and had a unique ability to make anyone who knew her feel special.
The way she lived her life was a direct reflection of her faith in God; serving others was second nature to her. She and her family would attend Trinity United Methodist Church, New Cumberland, after moving back to the area in 1976. At church, Betty volunteered with the Homebound Ministry, Hospitality and Worship Teams, and could quite often be found in the kitchen for various church events. She participated in numerous Bible study groups, coordinated greeters for Sunday services, attended a Grandparents in Prayer group, and joined efforts to revitalize the National Day of Prayer.
Betty was a wonderful wife, friend, and matriarch to her family, with a calming presence and an infectious laugh. She was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan and enjoyed rooting them on with family, and she had an uncanny way of calming any baby that happened to be passed her way. Her love continues to be felt by all, and her family and friends cherish the years and memories spent together.
Surviving is her best friend and husband of 62 years, Ron Winter; sister, Lois Myers of Enola; a son and daughter, Timothy A. Winter (Penny Stoner) and Amy E. Rynex (Edward), both of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Timmy Winter (Stacy) of Harrisburg, Alicia Winter (Aaron Smithgall) of Dillsburg, Owen and Evan Rynex, both of Mechanicsburg, and Samuel and Levi Britt, both of Carlisle; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Campbell and Doris Barneycastle; and a brother, Robert Laudermilch.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30PM on Friday, April 21, 2023 at Trinity United Methodist Church, New Cumberland, with a public viewing taking place from 10:30AM until services begin in the church. Burial will immediately follow in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill.
