Herbert “Herb” M. Packer, III, of Camp Hill, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021 at UPMC Pinnacle West Shore. He was born in Philadelphia on April 19, 1951 to the late Helen (Perot) Packer and Herbert M. Packer, Jr.
Herb graduated from East Pennsboro High School in 1969 and continued his education at Penn State University where he earned a degree in Political Science. Herb played for the Penn State basketball team. Upon graduation, he moved to Europe and played professional basketball in several countries.
Settling in central Pennsylvania after his time in Europe, Herb began employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He held several positions with the state, including Director of the Governor’s Action Team, and ended his career serving as the Director of the Office of PennPORTS.
Outside of work, Herb volunteered his time and energy to Special Olympics Pennsylvania for over 31 years. Specifically, he directed the Area M basketball program. In August 2019, Herb was honored for his commitment by being inducted into the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Hall of Fame.
Family was of utmost importance to Herb. If you knew him, you knew of his devotion to his sister, her husband, and his nieces, specifically. He bragged about them to everyone who would listen.
Surviving Herb is his sister, Lynne Wells (husband, Robert) of VA; his nieces, Allison Morales (husband, Jose), Jessica Wells, and JoAnna Wells, all of TX; and a great-niece. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Packer.
