Herbert Leo Linderer

November 15, 1928 — May 8, 2016

Herbert Leo Linderer, 87, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2016 at Sandy Ridge Memory Care in Candor, NC.
Born in Clinton, OK on November 15, 1928, he was one of 11 children of the late Emma May and Ado Peter Linderer. Orphaned by the age of 13, he was raised by an older sibling until he joined the Air Force in 1945 at the age of 17. He became a cryptographer with the 11th Air Force and was stationed in Harrisburg, PA where he met his future wife Patricia Jane Witmer. After they were married and settled back in Harrisburg, Herb went to work for Cohen Brothers Printers where he stayed for 40 years during which time he was a member of The Litho Club and the Central PA Craftsman Club. He was eventually promoted to plant superintendent and held that position until he retired in 1990. After his retirement, he was able to devote his time to his other passions, golf and woodworking. His wood crafts are pieces of art which he shared with many friends, neighbors and family members. He also built several pieces for Faith Presbyterian Church where he was a member for a short time. The pieces are now treasured family heirlooms that will continue down the generations throughout his family. Herb was first and foremost a family man. He was always coaching the teams his three children played on and also served as Cub Scout Master. After his children were grown, he continued to share his love and humanitarian ways by participating in mission trips to Maine and West Virginia to rebuild houses with Faith Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church for many years before and after his association with Faith Presbyterian.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Judy McNeill (Bill) of Seven Lakes, NC and JoEllen Giacomini (Vincent) of South Bound Brook, NJ; a son Herbert Jr. of Hillsborough, NJ; a sister, Anne Kelley of Enid, OK; a half-brother Bobby Linderer of Mesa, AZ ; a half-sister Thelma Jean Schwab of Woodward, OK ; a sister-in-law, Peggy Burke of Deland, FL; a brother-in-law, Gene Welch of Colorado Springs, CO and 4 grandchildren, Matt McNeill (June) of West End, NC, Kim Tew (Mike) of Seven Lakes, NC, CJ Giacomini (Tyler Powell) of South Bound Brook, NJ and Sara Jane Giacomini of South Bound Brook, NJ; 2 Great Grandsons, Zach & Luke McNeill; a companion of 15 years, Lorraine “Gerry” Conway; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
