Herbert R. Murphy, 83, of Lewisberry and formerly of Nutley, NJ, went to his eternal rest on May 3, 2016, at Holy Spirit Hospital, East Pennsboro Twp. He was born in Newark, NJ, the son of the late Robert and Jessie (Kirschman) Murphy and was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Dennis Thompson. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean War. Until retirement, Herbert enjoyed his duties as a police officer in the town of Nutley. After retirement, he became a very active school guard. Herbert was a member of the American Legion Post #70, Nutley.
He had many interests and among those, he enjoyed old cowboy movies, animal documentaries, pro-wrestling and crossword puzzles. Herbert was also a great turnip and mashed potatoes chef at holiday dinners.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Barbara Ann (Thompson) Murphy; his son, William F. Gil of Lewisberry; his daughter-in-law, Karen Gil of Lewisberry; and the joy of his life, his grandson, Tristan R. Gil. Herbert will be missed by his sisters-in-law, Virginia Thompson, Regina Wolfe, Diane Thompson and his brother-in-law, William Thompson and Herbert’s many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Monday at Parthemore Funeral Home and Cremation Services, New Cumberland with the Rev. Michael McFadden officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Twp.
