Irene Seiders Bigler

Irene Seiders Bigler, 98, formerly of New Cumberland, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2019 in Messiah Lifeways, Upper Allen Twp.

She was a WWII U.S. Marine Corps veteran; a graduate of Lebanon Valley College, Annville (1941); a graduate of Halifax High School (1937); was formerly a teacher with the former Duncannon School District and later worked with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Wilkes Barre and Harrisburg.

Irene was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Lemoyne and a former member of Twenty-Ninth Street United Methodist Church, Harrisburg where she was a Sunday School teacher for fifty years. She was a volunteer with the Red Cross for twenty-five years and a charter member of and donor to the Women’s Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. Irene’s Chocolate Torte was a selection in Taste of Home magazine a few years ago.

Irene was born in Halifax to the late Harvey J. and Elizabeth D. (Sible) Seiders. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert D. Bigler in 2011 (married 1950), and sisters Dorothy Lyter and Mary Ellen McCaleb.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Robert D. Bigler, II and wife Rev. Lynda I. Bigler of Portland, OR; two grandchildren, Sheryl Porter and Robert Scott Bigler; and two great grandsons; niece, Charlotte Lyter Diebler; and nephews, Robert “Gene” McCaleb, Karl McCaleb and Richard Lyter.

Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, September 21, 2019 in Grace United Methodist Church, 309 Herman Ave. Lemoyne, PA 17043 with the Rev. Jason Schwartzman, her pastor and Rev. Lynda I. Bigler, her daughter in law co-officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time in the church. Burial will be in Rolling Green Cemetery, Lower Allen Twp.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Irene’s memory are respectfully encouraged to either Lebanon Valley College, The Valley Fund, c/o the Advancement Office, 101 N.
