J. Scott Calkins, Esquire

J. Scott Calkins, Esquire, 90, of Lower Allen Township, Camp Hill and Naples, FL, died Thursday, May 04, 2017 at his home in Camp Hill. “Scott” graduated from the University of Miami in 1949 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1952. He was a World War II Navy veteran.
In his early career, he was Counsel for the PA House Republicans. Scott created his own boutique law firm (J. Scott Calkins, Esq.) which specialized in national and state corporate clients, both profit and non-profit. His firm was the first Governmental Affairs law firm in the state.
His firm provided special legal and governmental services to the PA Railroad Association, the PA Funeral Directors Association, Sears and Roebuck, insurance industry, the PA Home Builders Assoc., and numerous other clients and in 1980 he made Loudon “Hap” Campbell a partner which created the Calkins & Campbell Law Firm in Harrisburg. Scott retired in 1998.
Scott loved the game of tennis and the people associated with it. He was an avid player in the U.S., Canada and Europe. “Young Scott”, as he was known to his close friends, returned to playing tennis and participated in many senior tennis tournaments in the Middle States section of USTA. He was No. 1 in the Middle States section for 12 straight years. That Section includes all of the players from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Upper West Virginia. Scott and his doubles partner, Howie Attwater (of Lancaster), participated in many doubles tournaments throughout the Eastern United States; they were ranked No. 1 for eleven straight years and also won the Canadian National Tennis Open in their age group two out of the three years they competed.
Scott spent three decades promoting public education; including being both a member and president of the following school boards; Susquehanna Township, the Old County Board which he dissolved, the Capital Area Intermediate Unit, and the Pennsylvania School Boards Assoc. When he was involved with the Capital Area Intermediate Unit, he was able to convince the Unit to adopt a vocational school for Dauphin County.
Born on April 12, 1927 in Bradford, he was the son of the late Frank W. and Harriett (Meyer) Calkins. Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Rosemarie I. (Ludwig) Calkins, who stayed by his side and gave him loving care and comfort during the eight months of his illness; two daughters, Robin W. Ocker and husband, Daniel of Newville, and Mercedes M. Calkins and her companion, Brian Tucker of Boston; son, J. Scott Calkins, II of Lebanon; two grandchildren, Carrie Calkins Tucker of Boston and Jared Calkins of Orlando, FL.
Grave side services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, June 15, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township.
