James Homer Mitchell, 98, of Hampden Twp., Mechanicsburg, died Sunday, November 6, 2016, at his residence.
He retired as an accountant with Swift & Company, Harrisburg, and also the Comptroller’s Office, State Dept. of Revenue. He was a 1936 graduate of the former William Penn High School, Harrisburg and also the former Central Pennsylvania Business College.
Mr. Mitchell was a Captain in the U. S. Army, serving as Company Commander with the 42nd Infantry Division during WWII, and was Hospital Chief of seven P.O.W. hospitals in and around Salzburg, Austria. He was responsible for the safeguarding and medical attention of approximately 5000 prisoners of war. While in Austria, he met his wife, the former Irene Korompai, who preceded him in death. Born in Wilmington, DE, on May 25, 1918, he was the son of the late James P. and Bessie (Cherry) Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Gulick and Helen Gilmore.
Surviving are his son, Dr. Robert J. Mitchell of New York, NY; a brother, Frank Mitchell of Stewartstown; two sisters, Marie Keckler and Ourania Albright, both of Harrisburg; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday at Parthemore Funeral Home and Cremation Services, New Cumberland.
