Joan L. {Lewis} Hastings ,79, of New Cumberland , PA entered into eternal life on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. Joan was born in York, Pa on March 22, 1934, daughter of the late Alfred W. & Irene J. Lewis. She was preceded in death by her brother A. William Lewis. Joan was a 1952 graduate of William Penn High School, Harrisburg , PA . Joan was employed by Bell Telephone after graduation. She was the Treasurer of P. Hastings Corporation. She had taught kindergarten children and was a member of Community United Methodist Church where she had taught children’s Sunday School. She also had served on various church committees.
Joan was a member of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary and was a past State President. She had served on both State and National Scholarship committees of the League. Joan was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Joan enjoyed bowling, bridge, traveling, and being with her loving family. Joan and her surviving husband, Paul Hastings, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last June. Joan was a loving mother to their three children; son Gary Hastings & wife Kimberly of Dauphin; daughter Dona Elscheid & husband Edward of New Cumberland; and daughter Jodi Taylor and husband, Todd of Enola. Joan was adored and loved by her eleven grandchildren, Jennifer, Wendy, Sarah, Justin, Jessica, Michelle, Nicole, Julia, Jeremy, Ashley and Mitchell as well as her ten great grandchildren, Madison, Maisy, Jillian, Zachary, Jordan, Gracie, Hayden, Hudsyn, Makayla and Scarlett. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Roberta Lewis of New Cumberland.
Family and Friends are invited to a viewing at Parthemore Funeral Home, 1303 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, on Wednesday evening, April 24th from 6 to 8 p.m. The Marine Corps League Auxiliary will hold a brief Memorial service at 7:30p.m. A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 25th at Community United Methodist Church, 1601 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, PA 17070. A one hour viewing will be held prior to the service and a reception will immediately follow the service at the church. Burial will be private for the family and invited guests.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that scholarship memorial contributions be sent to the Marine Corps League of PA and mail to P. O. Box 652 New Cumberland, PA 17070.
The family expresses its special thanks to Homeland Hospice and Christian Companions for their support during Joan’s lengthy illness.
