John K. Black, 74, of Camp Hill, died Monday, March 16, 2015, at his home. He was born on August 7, 1940, in Uniontown, PA, to the late Edward D. and Mary I. (Keenan) Black. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul E. Black of Pittsburgh.
John graduated from Uniontown High School in 1958, and received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Grove City College in 1962. He retired from the Pennsylvania Dept. of Banking in 1999 after 31 years of service. Following his retirement, he worked as a banking specialist at Shumaker Williams P.C., Camp Hill, and then at Bybel Rutledge LLP, Lemoyne.
He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, Camp Hill.
John was involved in officiating high school and college athletics for more than 40 years.
He was a member of the Capital Area Chapter of PIAA Football Officials and served as treasurer for several years. He officiated many district playoff games and the 1989 Big 33 Game. He also officiated semi-pro football in the Harrisburg area.
He was an active member of the Central Penn Chapter of PIAA Track & Field Officials and was certified by USA Track & Field. He officiated numerous high school and college invitationals and championship meets, including serving as head field judge at the state championships. He also served as the head starter at the Hershey’s Youth Track & Field Games North American Final for 30 years.
John enjoyed officiating very much and was admired by the athletes he met.
John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy (Rinehart); a son, Daniel and wife Amy of Camp Hill; a daughter, Jennifer and husband Edward Abolins of Mechanicsburg; five grandchildren: Madison, James and Logan Black, and Lidija and August Abolins; two nieces and a nephew.
One of the joys of his life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 2 pm at Christ Presbyterian Church, Camp Hill, with the Rev. Ellen Crawford True officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church, 421 Deerfield Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011; or to Grove City College, c/o Development Office, 100 Campus Drive, Grove City, PA 16127.
