John Palmer Bastardi, 91, of Mechanicsburg, PA and also of Boynton Beach, FL passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Holy Spirit Hospital, E. Pennsboro Twp.
A WWII Navy veteran, he served on the Destroyer Escort USS Foss, DE-59 and Destroyer USS Henderson, DD-785 in both the Atlantic and the Pacific Theaters. He was employed as a diesel shop foreman for forty-seven years for the Pennsylvania Railroad and was retired from Conrail. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Moose, and Elks clubs.
He was born May 26, 1924 in Harrisburg to the late John and Martha (Palmer) Bastardi. He was also preceded in death by a son, John Brian Bastardi.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn March Bastardi, a son, Gregory E. Skipper of Colonial Park; three daughters, Jan Michelle Skipper of Harrisburg, Cathy Bastardi Kovach (Thomas J. ) of Harrisburg, and Robin L. Bastardi of Harrisburg; a brother, Wayne A. Bastardi of Pompano Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Chad, Joshua, and Christina; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Aubrey and his furry companion Louie, who he walked daily.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, August 9, at 1:00 PM at the American Legion Post #730, 3813 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Assn., Capital Region Division, 1019 Mumma Road, Wormleysburg, PA 17043.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Holy Spirit Hospital, MSICU, for the compassionate treatment given to John as well as supporting the family.
