Joseph P. Betcke, 87, formerly of Etters, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 while under hospice care at Country Meadows, Mechanicsburg. He was the son of the late David M. and Lena M. (Brown) Betcke, born on October 23, 1934 in Ithaca, NY.
Joe grew up in Waverly, NY, graduating in 1953 from Waverly High School. From there, he would enlist in the U.S. Army, serving his country for two years before entering the private sector. He began with W.T. Grant department store and then transitioned to Rite Aid Corporation, working his way from store manager to district supervisor. Transferred to their corporate headquarters in Camp Hill, Joe and his family would relocate to Central PA in 1972. He later decided to switch gears, going into sales. He would work for two different paper and stationery companies—Allen Penn and then M.J. Earl.
Blessed with a gregarious disposition, Joe could talk to anyone about anything. He was passionate about cars and sailboats. He had more than a passing interest in Hi-Fi equipment, even having built his own stereo while in college. He loved to organize and display his woodworking tools, and even, on occasion, actually use them. Joe was all about his family, and they would faithfully attend Fishing Creek Salem United Methodist Church, Goldsboro; he was active with his church, volunteering in different capacities and sitting on the building committee. He was a New York Giants fan and rooted for Syracuse basketball.
Joe’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg, where Joe resided and received genuine care these past two years. They would also like to thank Lifesong Hospice, who not only provided him dignity and comfort in his final days, but also provided him with a day of great joy by setting up a mini car show for Joe with the help of Cumberland Valley Classic Car Club. Joe’s family is eternally grateful.
Surviving Joe are his daughters, Kim Betcke of Mechanicsburg, Ann Jadro (Alan) of Madison, NJ, and Susan Betcke of Camp Hill; a son, David Betcke of Enola; and three grandchildren, Matthew Jadro of New York City, NY, and Carlos and Elena Betcke, both of Camp Hill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ellen (Fitzpatrick) Betcke (dcd. 2016); and his sister and brothers, Margaret, David and Ernest.
A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Monday, June 6, 2022 at Good News Free Methodist Church, 124 State Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050.
