Larry A. Sayre, Ed.D

April 22, 1941 — March 18, 2020

Dr. Larry A. Sayre, Ed.D, 78, of Camp Hill, and formerly of Wellsburg, West Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 in his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

He retired after more than twenty years as Superintendent of Schools for the West Shore School District, encompassing portions of Cumberland and York Counties, PA. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Camp Hill.

Larry graduated from Wellsburg High School and Bethany College, Bethany, WV, where he earned undergraduate degrees in political science and mathematics and was captain of the Bison basketball team. He continued his education at West Virginia University and earned both his master’s and doctoral degrees there. He taught math and history for several years at his alma mater and was head coach of their junior and senior varsity basketball teams, taking his Orange Knights to the state championship game in 1967. He subsequently became Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction for the North Central West Virginia Learning Resources Center. His first position as Superintendent of Schools was in Uniontown, PA, where, at the age of thirty-two, he was the youngest superintendent in the state. He was also Superintendent of Schools for Millcreek Township School District, Erie, PA before accepting the position at West Shore.

Above all, Larry loved his family. His devotion to his wife and children was unmatched, his relationship with his grandchildren special beyond words. He was passionate about sports, but he was particularly fond of his WVU Mountaineers. Prior to his illness, his favorite pastime was attending Mountaineer football games with his son, son-in-law, and grandson. His dedication to education, his mentorship, and his expertise guided many and inspired a family tradition of service in teaching and administration.

Larry was born in Wheeling, WV to the late Lawrence and Eleanor Eunice (Lafollette) Sayre. He is also preceded in death by his son, Clay Green Sayre, and his sister, Jean Mozingo.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 55 years, Janet Green Sayre; children, Lawrence G. Sayre and wife Holly of Camp Hill and Lauren S. Hyde and husband Chris of Camp Hill; a sister Marion Lamone and husband Gene of Ft. Myers, FL; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Annie, and Christian.

Despite the many places Larry lived, his heart was always in West Virginia. The last country road he traveled took him not to “Almost Heaven”, but rather to Heaven, to the place he belongs.

The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Drabick, Carol Mellon, the staff at Penn State Hershey Cancer Center and Dr. George Azizkhan and his staff for their friendship, dedication and personal and professional care given to Larry through his battle.

A visitation with Larry’s family will be held from 9:30-10:30 am on Saturday, June 26, 2021 in Ascension Lutheran Church, 4768 Union Deposit Rd. Harrisburg, PA 17111. The visitation will be followed by a eulogy and time for Celebration and Remembrance from 10:30-11 am and will conclude with a memorial service beginning at 11.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions in Larry’s memory to either the American Cancer Society-Harrisburg, P.O.
