Lawrence E. Potter, 87, of Fairview Twp., New Cumberland, died Friday, February 8, 2013 in his residence with his loving wife by his side.
Mr. Potter was born in Utica, NY to the late Joel F. and Estella (Churchill) Potter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Anne Terese Scarangella.
Upon graduation from high school in New Hartford, NY in 1943, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He worked for the New York Telephone Company before joining the Pennsylvania State Police Communications Division in 1973. He retired in 1990 as a Communications Specialist Supervisor.
During his near 60 year membership in the American Legion he served as a Commander of Post 770 in Trumansburg, NY and Post 143 in New Cumberland, PA. He was an avid train enthusiast, a glorious storyteller, and the pillar of his family.
He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland and its Little Flower Club and a member of the West Shore Senior Center, New Cumberland.
He is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Catherine (Titus) Potter; children Robert J. Potter of Jupiter, FL, Mary Anne P. Swenie of Fayetteville, NC and Elizabeth Anne Capron of Azle, TX; a brother James of Rancho Cordova, CA and a sister Mary Schauber of Rochester, NY; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, February 11, 2013 in St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland with the Rev. Tiburtius Antony Raja as celebrant. There will be no viewing or visitation. Inurnment with military honors will be at 1 pm on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Hanover Twp., PA
