Major Michael W. Schappell, Usar, Ret.

Major Michael W. Schappell, USAR, Ret., 70, of New Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021 in his home.

He was a retired Major with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard with twenty years of service and served as a Medical Corpsman in Vietnam during four years of active duty. Additionally, Michael worked for the Commonwealth for twenty years with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare’s Food Stamp Program, the Pennsylvania Department of Health as WIC Retail Store Coordinator, and the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency before retiring from the Commonwealth. He was a member of the First Alliance Church, Harrisburg and received his Bachelor’s degree in Public Health Administration from the Pennsylvania State University.

Michael was born in Reading, PA to the late Willis M. and Betty (Brownawell) Schappell. In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by a sister Bonnie Mae Sheriff.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Regina (Ortseifer) Schappell; children, Amy Lane and husband Khary of Harrisburg and Jamie Schappell of Harrisburg; brothers, Mitchell Schappell, Russell Bender and Arthur Bender, all of Carlisle; three grandchildren, Ezra, Anaiah and KJ; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

In keeping with Michael’s wishes, services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions in Michael’s memory to either First Alliance Church, 403 S. Progress Ave. Harrisburg, PA 17109 or to Speranza Animal Rescue, 1216 Brandt Rd, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
