On Sunday, December 18, 2022 after 88 years, 8 months and 6 days here on earth, Marion Lillian Sauerwine let go of the hands of her husband, Paul; her daughters, Susan Ann and Cynthia Marie; and granddaughter, Sarah Michelle, saying “Good Bye” and without looking back, she turned and took the outstretched hand of Jesus. Together, side by side, they walked into paradise – her promised reward. She is free of her suffering, and she and Paul will once again be reunited someday.
She was the 4th of 5 children born to Adam William and Blanche Ethel (Hoover) Heckert of Lemoyne on April 12, 1934.
Marion graduated from Lemoyne High School in 1952, the last class to graduate from Lemoyne High School before it became West Shore High School. While in school, Marion was a member of the girls’ basketball team for 4 years and was in the color guard during her junior and senior year, carrying either the American or PA State flag. Marion was the president of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Club during her senior year. Upon graduation, she would enroll in Central Penn Business School (now of Summerdale), earning her degree a year later.
Marion married her high school sweetheart, Paul. They started dating after she invited Paul to an upcoming Sadie Hawkins dance. On March 27, 1954 they were wed in Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church by Rev. C. Authur Neal. While Pastor Neal oversaw Grace Lutheran Church in Highland Park, he filled in due to the illness of Rev. Henry A. Houseal.
Marion was a stay-at-home mom until Sue and Cindy were teenagers. She worked part-time at Dixon Office Supply, Lemoyne, and then spent time as a teller/receptionist for Dauphin Deposit Trust Co. at their Enola branch. Later she went to First Federal Savings & Loan, Harrisburg, where she worked in the mortgage processing department before moving upstairs to the Personnel/Human Resources department.
The little hands she cared for and nurtured into beautiful daughters, now cared for her during her final hours. Life is Good.
Marion is survived by her husband, Paul John Sauerwine; daughters, Susan Ann Shatto (husband, Jim) of Marysville, and Cynthia Marie Brumbaugh (husband, Terry) of New Bloomfield; granddaughter, Sarah Michelle Roberts (husband, Tim) of Enola; two great-grandchildren, Kohen Jeffrey and Lillian Maeve; and a sister, Carol Ann Henry of Lynn Haven, FL. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Adam William Heckert Jr; and sisters, Alma Marie “Sis” Hoyer and Lois Irene “Doll” High. She was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews and cherished by many cousins. She was known to her family as Sus or Aunt Susie.
Special thanks to the following people for the loving, compassionate care given to Marion: the entire staff at Harmony of West Shore, Grane Hospice Care, and Donna Balsbaugh, our “adopted 3rd daughter” who cared for us while we lived on Tuscany Ct in Camp Hill, and all our many friends and family who called and checked on Marion during her illness.
A visitation will be held from 12-1PM on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Grace United Methodist Church, Lemoyne, with a funeral service beginning at 1PM in the church. Immediately following, a procession will depart for Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill.
