Mary Ellen “Mebbie” Tanenbaum, 65, of Lower Paxton Township, died Sunday, October 17, 2021 at UPMC West Shore Hospital, Mechanicsburg. She was the daughter of the late George and Florence (Reese) Brennan, born on June 7, 1956 in Butler.
Mebbie was a graduate of Butler Area Senior High School Class of 1974. She worked at the American Cancer Society until November of 1976; the following month, she and her parents would move to Harrisburg. In January of 1977, she began working at the Lower Paxton Township Police Department as a records clerk. In 1993, she transferred to the Public Works Department, and would end up retiring from there after 44 years of service.
She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Harrisburg, and was active with several social organizations, including: the Council of Catholic Women, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus, and she was Queen of the Red Hat Honeys. Mebbie enjoyed cooking and baking and taking family vacations – especially trips to Treasure Lake in Dubois, PA.
Surviving Mebbie is her husband of 19 years, Barry P. Tanenbaum; children, Brian Tanenbaum of Dingmans Ferry, and Holly Tanenbaum-Kutroff (Geoffrey) of Milton; grandchildren, Summer, Autumn, Brian Jr., and Spring; a sister, Florence E. True of Harrisburg; seven nieces and nephews, George True Jr. (Tina), Donna Schuler, Patty Johnson, Michael True (Kimberly), Terry Signor (Barry), Beverly Katzman (JR), and Kelly Burhams (Tim); thirteen great-nieces and nephews, Larry Youch, Jason Melhorn, Erin Johnson, Marissa Signor, Adam McMasters, Tim Burhams Jr., Troy Anthony Watt, Brandon True, Anthony True, Morgan True, Briana True, Brianna Johnson, and Brittany Katzman; and six great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Marie Kunkel of Newport.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Paxtonia. A one-hour viewing will take place from 10AM until mass begins in the church. Burial will take place immediately following mass in Resurrection Cemetery, West Hanover Twp.
