Michael Homick

July 14, 1929 — May 19, 2016

Michael Homick, 86, of Camp Hill, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2016 in his residence.

He was born in Hudson, PA to the late Theodore and Helen (Walko) Homick.

He was a graduate of Plains Twp. High School, class of 1947. Mike proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy 4 years during the Korean War. He then got his teaching certificate from Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1956 as well as a Masters Degree from Shippensburg University. He taught Social Studies in New Cumberland High School and Cedar Cliff High School. Mike was a former president of the West Shore Education Association and was involved in the creation of the Susquehanna Valley Federal Credit Union.

Mike was an avid fisherman and recreational crabber in the waters of the Everglades and Chokoloskee Island, FL where he and his wife Sarae, of 60 years spent the last 22 winters. He was known for picking the right fishing holes!

Since 1978, Mike indulged in his winemaking hobby, creating wonderful sweet wines from any fruit he could get his hands on. He was also a regular volunteer for thirty years at the Ecumenical Food Pantry and worked with the YMCA day camps. He enjoyed tennis and dancing with Sarae. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion and a member of Everglades Community Church, Everglades City, FL.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Margaret H. "Peggy" Homick and siblings, Ann, Basil, Rose, John, Peter and Ted. He is survived by wife Sarae, son Andrew, 3 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, nieces, nephews and many friends.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 26 at 11 am in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 44 W Main St, Shiremanstown, PA 17011. A visitation with family will be held one hour prior to service time on Thursday. An additional memorial service will be held at a future date in Everglades City, FL in the Fall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ecumenical Food Pantry, Messiah Lutheran Church, 901 N. Sixth St. Harrisburg, PA 17102-1700 or Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, 1701 Linglestown Road Harrisburg, PA 17110.
