Paul John Sauerwine

May 31, 1934 — December 27, 2023

Lemoyne, PA

Paul John Sauerwine, 89, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, surrounded by his family. Born on May 31, 1934 in Harrisburg, he was the youngest of 4 children born to the late Joseph Henry and Elizabeth “Rosie” (Schuldise) Sauerwine. He was the husband of Marion Lillian (Heckert) Sauerwine, with whom he enjoyed 68 wonderful years of marriage.

A 1952 graduate of Lemoyne High School, Paul would go on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He married his high school sweetheart in 1954, and together, they would raise a family. He began employment with Bell Telephone, Harrisburg, and would retire after 35 years of service. Whether it was his career, his family, or focusing on a hobby, Paul always did things “right.” He was meticulous and organized, considerate of those around him, and always prepared.

Paul was quite an athlete; he was a track phenom in high school, running multiple sprints per meet, and he remained competitive in shuffleboard into his 80s. Paul and Marion were members of the Lakeland (Florida) Shuffleboard Club and he served as President of the club for several years. He and his late wife competed in many tournaments and later participated in the Senior Olympics in Florida and Pennsylvania, winning championships in both. He enjoyed playing cards and games with friends and family. Many a wonderful weekend was spent camping at World’s End State Park and then at Lake Raystown enjoying a quiet cove on their boat. Paul had his private pilot’s license and enjoyed reading and talking about flying.

He and his wife were longtime members of Grace United Methodist Church, Lemoyne, where they were married. He was a member of the Koinonia Sunday School class. Paul and Marion were members of the World’s End Group (WEG), a group of 7 couples (family and friends) who gathered at World’s End every fall for a weekend get-away. The group was active for over 50 years. He was also a proud member of the last graduating class of Lemoyne High School, staying in touch with his classmates and enjoying a monthly meal together in recent years. Paul also enjoyed meeting for lunch with Bell Telephone retirees and joining the Men’s group at church for breakfast.

Paul had a special place in his heart for Donna Balsbaugh and her husband, Jon. He considered her his 3rd daughter. She came to him to help care for Marion and became invaluable to them both.

Surviving Paul are his daughters, Susan Ann Shatto (husband, Jim) of Marysville, and Cynthia Marie Brumbaugh (husband, Terry) of New Bloomfield; granddaughter, Sarah Michelle Roberts (husband, Tim) of Enola; two great-grandchildren, Kohen Jeffrey and Lillian Maeve; a sister-in-law, Carol Henry (husband Maurice) and nieces and nephews, James Sauerwine, Jennifer Gummo, Richard Sauerwine, William Sauerwine, Patti Hess, Michael Lorah, Vicki Heckert, Marty Hoyer, Barry Hoyer, Holly Parker, Jill Gunter, Steven High, Linda Zeigler, Diane Kauffman, James High, Deborah Gertsen and Christine Youngblood; along with many great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marion (Heckert) Sauerwine; three siblings and their spouses, Joseph Sauerwine Jr. (Jane), Edward Sauerwine (Grace) and Helen Lorah (Jimmy); a niece, JoAnn Brunner; and three nephews, William Heckert, Jeffrey Heckert and Dean Sartin.

A funeral service will be held at 11AM on Monday, January 8, 2024 at Grace United Methodist Church, Lemoyne. A visitation with family will take place from 10AM until services begin in the church. Immediately following, a procession will depart for Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill, where he will be laid to rest alongside his wife.
