Peggy Forman Levin, 80, of Fairview Twp., New Cumberland, died Sunday, January 10, 2021 at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital.
Born on September 16, 1940, in Morgantown, WV, she was the daughter of the late Lester R. and Opal B. (Talbert) Forman. A Point Marion, PA native, she made her “stage debut” at the age of 9 when she sang with Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra on television in Philadelphia. Other TV appearances followed in Pittsburgh and Miami. In 1957 she was crowned Pennsylvania Coal Queen.
Peggy moved to Harrisburg in 1959 where she worked as a receptionist for the Pennsylvania State Education Association. Never venturing far from the footlights, she held leading roles in many musicals and plays with the Harrisburg Community Theatre. She was a “triple-threat” known for her abilities as an actress, singer and dancer and her HCT scrapbook overflows with numerous, glowing reviews of the roles she played. Although her longtime director tried to take her to Broadway, she chose to settle down and start a family.
As a wife and mother, Peggy enjoyed going to her children’s school activities and sports and attended countless swim meets, baseball and basketball games. She even became a certified PIAA Swimming Official possibly in an effort to be even closer to the pool. Peggy loved going on family vacations and could always be counted on to regale her family with her pitch-perfect singing the whole way to the Jersey shore. As a homemaker, she made a wonderful home for her family and endlessly welcomed neighbors and friends. She treated her children’s friends like they were her own giving all of them amusing nicknames that she felt were appropriately suited to their personalities or roles in her family.
In 1995 Peggy founded Personalized Greyhounds, Inc., a 501(c)(3) public charity, which to date has placed nearly 2,000 ex-racing Greyhounds into the homes of loving adopters with the help of the countless PG, Inc. volunteers. She found great joy in adopting numerous Greyhounds herself and treated all of them like her children. Her love of dogs ensured that there were always at least a few four-legged creatures roaming the house and competing for space on the couch.
Surviving is her husband of 59 years, Lewis J. Levin; a son and his wife, Marc T. and Ann Levin of York County, PA; two daughters and their husbands, Suzanne L. and Keith Buchman of Cumming, GA, and Cristen L. and Tony Harber of Milton, GA; four grandchildren, Patrick, Shelby, Liza and Abby.
As per her wishes, a family-only service will be scheduled in the coming months.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, (https://www.komen.org), 13770 Noel Road, Suite 801889, Dallas, TX 75380.
