Rev. David Goodloe Love III (“Goodloe”), 84, of York, PA, passed away on February 8, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. Goodloe was born in Kingstree, SC on December 1, 1935 to the late David Goodloe Love II and Blanche (Perkins) Love.
In 1942, Goodloe’s family moved to Leland, MS where he enjoyed a childhood rife with delightful experiences he remembered and shared with loved ones. He made his first trip to Pennsylvania in 1950 to the National Jamboree Boy Scouts of America Camp in Valley Forge and earned the Eagle Scout award in 1951. He graduated from Leland High School in 1953, Delta State University (BS, Business) in 1957, Scarritt College (M.A.Christian Education) in 1961 and Garrett Theological Seminary of Northwestern University (Master of Divinity) in 1966.
While attending Scarritt College in Nashville, TN, Goodloe met his loving wife, Mary Joyce Ward. They were married in Glennville, GA by Mary Joyce’s father, on September 15, 1960.
Goodloe was Director of Christian Education in the Allison United Methodist Church in Carlisle, PA from 1961 – 1963. In 1963, the couple moved to Evanston, IL where Goodloe studied at Garrett and their only child, Martha Marie Love, was born.
After graduation, Goodloe became a faithful minister of Jesus Christ, serving United Methodists in Madison, IL (First UMC), Greenville, SC (Twitty UMC), Harrisburg, PA (St. Marks UMC), Quincy, PA (Chaplain, Quincy UM Home for the Aging), Berwick, PA (St. Paul’s UMC), and Loganville, PA (Emanuel UMC).
Goodloe also had a lifelong passion for brace beagling. He got his first beagle, Tip, in 1949 and raised over 100 beagles, including many field champions, throughout his life. His kennel was named “Five Forks Beagles” and he was a member of the Chambersburg and Maryland Beagle Clubs.
Goodloe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Joyce Love, his daughter and her husband, Martha Love and Jon Leberknight, and his beloved granddaughter, Erin Leberknight. In addition, Goodloe has cousins and extended family members who were very special to him.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
