Richard C. “Dick” Gher, 85, of Camp Hill, PA passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Sarah Todd Home in Carlisle.
Richard was born on November 12, 1932 at the family home in New Cumberland, built by his father. He was the son of the late Charles A. Gher and Bessie (Wilder) Gher.
Richard was a 1950 graduate of the former New Cumberland High School, where his wife also graduated that year. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on February 17, 1953. After completing sixteen weeks of basic training at Camp Rucker, Alabama, he returned home on leave to marry his high school sweetheart on June 27, 1953. She was the former, Sibyl June Hoffmeier. After their wedding and a few short days in New York city, Dick was sent to Korea.
“Dick” was proud of his service to his country and the U.S. Army and as a veteran of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on December 3, 1954 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Richard first served with the 223rd Infantry Regiment, 40th Division and later served in the 151st Combat Engineers, 40th Division.
Military service awards were the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge.
Dick was a retired skilled carpenter and quality home builder, having lived in the house he built for his family for over fifty-years. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 143 and V.F.W. Post 7415, both of New Cumberland.
Richard was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, proud of his children and grandchildren. Family was the most important part of his life. He enjoyed his home, yard, “Old Country Music”, college sports, bus trips and reading the newspaper.
Along with his parents, Richard was also preceded in death by his wife, Sibyl (Hoffmeier) Gher, his brother, Donald E. Gher and sister Helen M. (Gher) Biesenkamp.
Richard is survived by a son, Richard S. Gher and wife, Renee of East Petersburg, daughters, Diane J. Kreamer of Carlisle and husband, Jeff, and Cheryl A. Gher of New Cumberland; grandchildren, Crystal J. Kreamer of Pittsburgh and Kyle R. Kreamer of Carlisle.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Friday in Parthemore Funeral Home and Cremation Services, New Cumberland. Burial will be in Rolling Green Memorial Park with full military honors.
Viewing will be held one hour prior to services in the funeral home.
