Robert "Bob" Charles Marks

March 13, 1917 — July 28, 2015

On July 28, 2015, Robert Charles Marks, "Bob", died at his home in Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg, PA. Bob was born in Harrisburg, PA in March, 1917, to the late Charles and Mildred Marks. He graduated from John Harris High School and The Bliss Electrical School in Takoma Park, Washington, D.C., now known as Montgomery College. Bob spent all of his summers as a young man on his grandparent's farm. He would ride his bicycle from Harrisburg both ways -- returning home healthy and strong from a summer of hard work, good food, and family fun.
Bob developed endless skills from his experiences. He rode horses, a motorcycle, and flew his airplane. He was talented in wood and metal sculpture and made family jewelry. Gardening was one of Bob's favorite pastimes. He gave vegetables to his neighbors all summer long. Bob was also a master builder. He constructed a summer cottage on the Susquehanna River, and restored his cabin in the mountains of Perry County, PA. Along with his wife, Thelma, Bob was a founding member of the Capital Area Christian Church and helped to build it.
He loved the outdoors and hunted birds with his Brittany Spaniels, deer with bow and arrow, and bear. On a moose-hunting trip to Canada he spent most of his vacation helping the townspeople build a dam against an oncoming flood.
Bob had love for all living things and he cared for them gently. He was a giver, a nurturer, and always put others before himself. Bob loved his family, friends, and the world. He loved traveling and was a student of History. His sweet spirit and his undying interest in those around him made everyone who met him smile. Bob helped anyone in need, and shared kindness with everyone. Bob never gave up on anyone or anything. He always did his best. Bob's knowledge, will, and strength served as inspiration to young family members. Bob served his country, working sometimes around the clock, in the Bethlehem Steel Factory during World War II.
He was a dear husband for 66 years of the late Thelma Louis Baldwin; beloved father of Cinda Rose and her husband Edward, and Kathryn Miller and her husband Frank; grandfather of Joshua Miller, Timothy Miller and his wife Sarah, and Elizabeth Rose; great-grandfather of Zach Miller, Zoe Miller, and Dillon Miller.
Friends and family will be received in The West Residence Commons Room at Bethany Village, West Apartments, Door 62, Mechanicsburg, PA, on Tuesday, August 4, from 11:30 to 12:30 PM with services at 12:30 PM. Internment will take place at Rolling Green Cemetery in Lower Allen Twp. After the Service, flowers will be donated to Bethany Village residents.
