Rodney Holderbaum, 68, of Lewisberry, passed away at home on Friday August 30, 2019. Rod was a 1976 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. After beginning his career with Michael Baker Inc., he joined Gannett Fleming Inc. of Harrisburg, PA in 1980 and worked full-time as a Civil Engineer for 37 years until his retirement in 2017. Since that time, he continued as a Senior Consultant for special assignments. Rodney was a Licensed Professional Surveyor in 2 states and a Registered Professional Engineer in 5 states. At the time of his retirement, Rod was a Vice President and owner in Gannett Fleming Inc, and he was the National Practice Leader for Dam Engineering. Over the course of his career, he led or provided engineering and construction services on more than 200 dams and flood control projects nationwide, and he became a nationally recognized and appreciated expert on dams. Among his many professional achievements, his projects received national engineering society awards, and he led development of Professional Manuals of Practice that are used by private industry and government agencies as the definitive guides for certain dam design issues. His professional associates will always remember him for his commitment to excellence, his ability to share his extraordinary knowledge, and as a mentor who patiently inspired younger professionals.
Rod’s diverse hobbies included restoring his beloved British sports cars, attending car shows, completing his cabin, and every aspect of the outdoors including hiking, backpacking, camping, boating, canoeing, fishing, and hunting. In every area of interest that he pursued, he was passionate, creative and meticulous. All his friends and associates will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his wife of more than 41 years, Laura (Prather) Holderbaum, his son Matthew and his wife Marissa of Lemoyne, his sister Kathy and her husband Michael, and their sons David and Christopher.
Private family services will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested you take time to be where Rod loved to be, outdoors. Take that time with your family and make those little memories we all cherish.
