Ronald P. Zeigler

d. January 14, 2014

Ronald P. Zeigler, 78, formerly of Camp Hill, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Country Meadows in Mechanicsburg.

Ron, or Ziggy, as he was known to many, was a retired English teacher who spent the majority of his career at Lower Dauphin High School, where he was the department head and coached extracurricular activities such as the drama program. Earlier in his career, he taught at Susquehanna Township Junior High and Camp Hill High School, where he also coached wrestling and cross-country.

He was a graduate of Camp Hill High School, Kutztown University and Pennsylvania State University, where he received his master’s degree. After college, Ron served in the Army’s 2nd Armored Cavalry in Nuremberg, Germany. He was a Mason and a member of the Camp Hill Church of God, where he sang in the choir. He spent years volunteering for various organizations and causes, including church councils, local political campaigns and school functions.

Passionate about the Phillies and his childhood idol, Ted Williams, Ron was a voracious reader, enthusiastic traveler and talented singer. He loved Emily Dickinson, Henry David Thoreau and Edward Hopper. Never able to pass up the chance to crack a joke or insert a pun into every conversation, he was an indefatigable comedian with a generous heart who will be missed by many.

He was predeceased by his parents, Kathryn and Luther Zeigler of Camp Hill, and a toddler brother Barry. He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Zeigler, and her beau Dan Hugos in Jim Thorpe, PA; his brother Dick and wife Agnes in Berlin, MD; niece Amy and nephew Matt; and beloved friend Martha Shore in New Castle, IN.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at the Camp Hill Church of God (123 N. 21st St, Camp Hill) on Friday, January 24th at noon, with visitation at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Emily Dickinson Museum, 280 Main Street, Amherst MA 01002, or his church.
