Ronald M. Winter

September 10, 1936 — September 11, 2024

New Cumberland, PA

Ronald M. Winter, of New Cumberland, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, September 11, 2024. Having just celebrated his 88th birthday the day prior, he was born on September 10, 1936, in Lemoyne to the late Gilbert and Edith (Miller) Winter.

A graduate of the former New Cumberland High School (Class of 1954), Ron would serve in the U.S. Army before working in the logistics field for most of his professional career. He spent time at trucking companies like P&S, Carolina Freight and Roadway, before working for Phillips Office Products, Rite Aid Corporation, and then the Mechanicsburg Navy Depot, from which he would retire.

He was a lifelong member of the New Cumberland Fire Department, with his involvement spanning from his teen years until his mid-80s, when he could still be seen in town sporting a yellow vest with the fire police. In 1958, he’d meet his future wife, Betty, while running ambulance, crossing paths at Harrisburg Hospital when she worked in the admissions office—they would marry two years later.

He was a Zembo Shriner, belonged to American Legion Post 143, New Cumberland, and loved to be on the golf course. Unable to stay still for long in retirement, he would work on the grounds crews of Dauphin Highlands, Hershey South and Riverview Golf Course as a senior. He thoroughly enjoyed these years, and whether it was with his grandkids, son, or friends, enjoying a round of golf was what made him happiest. He was also a gifted baritone, singing with the Keystone Capital Chorus and at he and Betty’s longtime church, Trinity Church of New Cumberland. Singing with his daughter and grandchildren on multiple occasions were some of the most fulfilling moments of his life.

He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, rooting for the Phillies and Eagles throughout the years. And in the last decade or so, when relaxing at home, a sudoku or crossword puzzle book hardly left his side. Above all else, a constant for Ron was the love he had for his family.

Surviving is his daughter, Amy E. Rynex (Edward) of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Timmy Winter (Stacy) of Harrisburg, Alicia Winter (Aaron) of Dillsburg, and Owen and Evan Rynex, both of Mechanicsburg; two sisters, Jolene W. Tucker and Kaye E. Stewart (Richard); a daughter-in-law, Penny Stoner; sister-in-law, Lois Myers; many nieces and nephews; and a grand-dog, Apollo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Helen E. “Betty” Winter (dcd. 2023); a son, Timothy A. Winter; and siblings, Barbara W. Patterson and Donald R. Winter.

A visitation will be held from 10AM until a funeral service begins at 12PM on Monday, September 16, 2024, at Trinity Church of New Cumberland. Burial in Rolling Green Cemetery will immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Ron’s name to the New Cumberland Fire Department at www.newcumberlandfire.org, or to Homeland Hospice Care at www.homelandathome.org.
