Staff Sergeant John R. Henninger, Jr.

 

Staff Sergeant John R. Henninger, Sr., US Army, Ret., 78, of Mechanicsburg, formerly of Harrisburg and Colorado Springs, passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2023 in UPMC West Shore Hospital, Hampden Twp.

In addition to his military career, John was a well-known Master Floorcovering Installer for more than 40 years. He spent his career teaching others his craft in both Pennsylvania and Colorado. His influence spawned the careers of dozens of craftsmen across the nation. He loved exploring the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. Hunting, fishing, boating, and woodworking were some of his favorite pastimes. He attended Vibrant – A Christian Church, Mechanicsburg, PA.

John was born in Shamokin, Schuylkill County, PA, the son of the late Howard and Florence (Asper) Henninger. He was the widower of Sara A. (Kelchner) Henninger, and preceded in death by his eldest grandson, Kyle Kelchner.

He is survived by his three children: Lester Kelchner of Lawnton; Denice Huggins of New Freedom; John R. Henninger, Jr. and wife Jennifer of New Cumberland; his sister Kathryn Henninger of Marysville, his ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren with one on the way in January.

A memorial service will be held at 4PM on Saturday, October 28th at Vibrant – A Christian Church, 1775 Lambs Gap Rd. Mechanicsburg, PA 17050. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to service time in the church. Burial with military honors will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions in John’s memory to Vibrant – A Christian Church at the address above.
