Wayne Edward Bohn, 88, passed away from Alzheimer’s disease on January 2, 2025, at Messiah Lifeways, Mechanicsburg, PA. Born February 29, 1936, in Bellefonte, he was the son of the late Daniel C. Bohn and Zelda L. (Martin) Bohn Magee.
Wayne was a 1954 graduate of Chief Logan High School, where he was a top athlete, excelling in both football and baseball. As a football player, “#33” served as a star running back, advancing to several regional all-star games and a listing as an alternate on the US High School All-American Team. Professional baseball teams had a strong interest in Wayne as well, and he was invited to try out for the Pittsburgh Pirates on three occasions. He ultimately chose to attend Lycoming College on a full football scholarship.
After college, Wayne became a soldier in the US Army, where he proudly served as a teletype operator with the 229th Signal Company in Stuttgart, Germany, before receiving an honorable discharge. Back in the states, he resettled with his wife and daughters in Camp Hill, while working at Bethlehem Steel, where he retired from its carpentry shop in 2001.
Sports remained a constant in his life. Sharing his love for football, he became “Coach Wayne,” lending his talents and football leadership to hundreds of young men in the pee-wee and midget leagues for the West Shore Vikings in the 1970s. His passion for sports and lifelong athleticism kept him active for many years to come. He was an avid bowler and played in several bowling leagues as an adult. He became an excellent golfer in his later years as well, where he had an enviable handicap in various leagues. When not playing sports, making room for yet another trophy on his shelf, or mentoring, he loved to watch just about any sport, either on television or in person, especially Penn State football and the New York Yankees.
Wayne is best remembered as a soft-spoken, fair, funny, and generous father, brother, friend, and mentor.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna M. (Boyer Posavec) Bohn in 2012, a grandson, Ryan Thomas Herich, a brother, Robert Bohn, and a sister, Charlotte Elaine Fultz.
He is survived by two daughters, Denise (Chris) Herich of San Diego, CA, and Peggy (Geoffrey) Shuff of Mechanicsburg; two stepsons, David (Suzanna) Posavec of Harrisburg, and Thomas (Nicole) Posavec of Halifax; eight grandchildren, Matthew and Nathan Herich, Katherine and Leo Posavec, Lexi Cantone, Noah Hoffman, Sofia and Trace Posavec; two brothers, Charles “Jack” (Janice) Bohn of Yeagertown, and George (Barbara) Bohn of Lewistown; a sister-in-law, Mary Bohn of Lewistown; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at the Parthemore Funeral Home, 1303 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, on January 16, 2025, at 11am. Internment will immediately follow at Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown, PA.
