William E. Lee, 94, of Carlisle, formerly of New Cumberland, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Manor Care, Camp Hill.
A WWII veteran, Mr. Lee proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army, Infantry Headquarters Co. 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry, 4th Division. He fought in several European battles including the Invasion of Normandy, France where his division stormed Utah beach on D-Day. He received numerous medals and badges including qualifying as an Expert M1 Rifle Combat Infantryman. After receiving an Honorable Discharge he returned to Pennsylvania and began his career as a driver with Greyhound Lines.
Mr. Lee’s lifetime hobby was enjoying model trains. He was a member of the Keystone Model Railroad Historical Society. He loved the intricacies of building models and set development and dedicated a room in his home for intricate sets. He volunteered his time to host at the Christmas shows and open houses at the Society. He enjoyed the annual trip to Timonium, Maryland with members to what he termed “ The Mecca of Trains.” The hobby never lost its luster.
Mr. Lee liked to spend his down time enjoying a daily walk. If not on the sidewalks of New Cumberland, one could find him slinking at the Capitol City Mall and, in later years, the aisles of Walmart or Giant Foods. He enjoyed people and people watching. Spending a quiet evening with family was all he needed for entertainment, along with the Larry King show.
He was born February 10, 1920 in Pittsburgh to the late Francis and Emma (Burndt) Lee. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Kephart Lee.
He is survived by his wife, Lois B. Lee; six daughters, Mary Hopper of Ocala Fl, Carol Hassett of Mechanicsburg, Patricia English, Lisa Baldwin, Ann Heidecker, of New Cumberland and Michelle Hall of Camp Hill; a son, William E. Lee, Jr of Selinsgrove.; twelve grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
